Does anyone else put Frank's RedHot on their popcorn? It's delicious.

Apple Store
In case you couldn't decipher my previous post, I'm at the Apple store and was sending it from an iPhone. I was practicing typing on one.
So now I'm by the computers and I can't find a free one. There should be time limit on how long people can use these things because I've been standing by a table of twelve of them for at least twenty minutes and none of them have opened up. I swear, I think some of these people are running businesses out of this joint.
Okay, I just did a lap and looked to see what everyone is doing. One lady is buying stuff on eBay. Another is looking for free stuff to do in NYC. A young guy is watching YouTube videos. Someone else is booking a hotel. Everybody else seems to be sending emails.
It's like the library.
Ooh, one just opened up!

NYPD
So I'm standing on the corner of 57th and Fifth. There are about 60 police cars lining every side of the street within a one block radius and they all have their lights on. In all of my time in New York I've never seen such a display, so I ask a policeman what's going on and he tells me they're filming something for Celebrity Apprentice.
This is where our tax dollars go, fellow New Yorkers.
I don't have my camera with me so I can't take a picture, but I'll search for some online later; someone's bound to upload one.

J Crew
I'm meeting my agent for lunch and I'm early, so I'm browsing around J Crew.
LOTS of cute stuff right now. Pretty mustard yellows and heather grays. Check it out.

iPod Playlists
I have a playlist on my iPod of my top 100 most-played songs. It's a smart playlist, so songs automatically move onto it if their play count goes high enough, bumping songs with lower play counts off in the process.
Last week I fell asleep listening to Paul Simon's "Negotiations & Love Songs," so the album played over and over again until I woke up. Then, yesterday, a friend was going through my iPod and was like, "Um, why is 'You Can Call Me Al' on your most-played list?"
That's why.
"You Can Call Me Al" is pretty much the worst Paul Simon song ever. Can we all agree on that?

The Ped Egg
Okay, so this thing is totally disgusting because, ultimately, it grates away at your callouses like they're a hunk of Parmesan cheese, BUT...
I bought a Ped Egg yesterday because there was a big display of them at the drug store and they were only $9.99 each and OMG... it totally works.
It's surprisingly gentle on your feet and it made mine so incredibly soft. If you can get past the grated skin particles that it collects, I highly recommend you get one.

Fat Cat Came Home!
Fat Cat came home!
From Kori:
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to update with great news! My cat came back around four in the morning, after having been gone for 10 days. Thank god, he's safe (he's been taken to the vet for a checkup and everything looks good) albeit a little skinnier.
I want to thank everyone for their prayers and kind thoughts that you sent my way. It's amazing what the power of prayers can do.
Karyn, thank you so much for posting this. You've proven my belief about the innate kindness and goodness of people. Thank you for taking the time out to give my situation a bit of attention. You are truly an awesome person.
Oh, so sweet! Thank you! And yay for Fat Cat!

Mom Visit
I've had a family-filled July. My dad came for a visit at the beginning of the month, then everyone went to Rochester last weekend to visit my step-sister Tracy, and now my mom is coming to town tomorrow.
My mom hasn't been to visit me in Brooklyn since 2003, and even then, she only stayed for about 12 hours. (She came for my Save Karyn book party... in at 5pm, out at 5am the next morning.) I'm so excited to have to here that I painted the apartment. It looks so pretty!
Someone asked, "Is your mom that high-maintenance that she'll care what your apartment looks like?" The answer to that is no, I just want it to look nice for her.
Okay, it's a little too sunny in here to get a good picture of it, but here goes.
The color is a very subtle stone/putty. It's more gray and less tan than it seems in the picture. I love the way the glossy white molding stands out from it. I didn't paint the wall with the windows, but I think I'm going to.
Oh, up at the top on the right is my yarn stash. I didn't finish hanging it all yet, but it's pretty clever storage, isn't it?

Yolato
I bought these frozen yogurt bars and they are delicious. Yolato. They taste just like Pinkberry.
One bar has 80 calories and 0 grams of fat.
According to their website, they have a few stores but they're only in the New York area. So I'm not sure if these bars are available just here or nationwide. Check your grocery store!

Help Find Fat Cat!
A few days ago, a reader named Kori posted a comment about her cat disappearing and asked if I could help find him...
Two days ago, my cat went missing and I've done nothing but cry. I've made signs, did neighborhood searches, put out his litter box along with his favorite food, but he still hasn't come back. I was wondering if you know of any organizations here in the New York City area that helps owners find their pets. I'm desperate!
I didn't know of any organizations, but I had Kori send me a picture of her cat and the details surrounding his disappearance so I could post it, so here it is:
Her cat's name is Fat Cat, but he doesn't really answer to it. This is what he looks like:
He disappeared Friday night, July 11th, in the Corona area of Queens.
If you have any information about the whereabouts of Fat Cat, please contact Kori at fairyangel82 [at] hotmail.com.
Flipping Out
Mark got me hooked on the show "Flipping Out" on Bravo. I love it and I love Jeff Lewis. If I were more motivated, I'd be him. (I can be a bit obsessive about things.) (That's an understatement.) (I have issues; see the t-shirt in the previous post for a partial list.)
A lot of the houses he flips are in David and Mark's neighborhood.
Does anyone else watch?
Oh, and the new season of Project Runway starts tomorrow night!
Old Friends, New T-Shirts
Naomi and me trying on tees in a fitting room at Henri Bendel:
Please notice how I'm trying to suck in my stomach with a little help from my hand. Someone's getting fat.
Here's another picture:
It's a little blurry, sorry, but did you see how Naomi's inner thighs don't touch? Skinny bitch.
Anywho, about the t-shirts... Henri Bendel had a bunch of them, each printed with a different list of personality traits. Naomi picked out the one that best fit me and I picked out the one that best fit her.
Here's the one she picked for me:
And here's the one I picked for her:
She's not really frivolous, ostentatious, or radical, or but she's definitely multifaceted, highly talented, triumphant, and a mastermind.
We didn't realize it at the time, but the tees were based on zodiac signs. Even though Naomi's a Virgo and I'm a Libra, based on what we picked for each other, I should be a Pisces and Naomi should be a Gemini.
The Libra one said...
Turbulent.
Manipulative.
Indulgent.
Articulate.
Righteous.
Refined.
Virtuoso.
Brigitte Bardot.
John Lennon.
Olivia Newton John.
Yohji Yamamoto.
Mahatma Ghandi.
PS - We didn't buy the t-shirts. We just tried them on for fun. Wee!
Celebrity Sighting: A-Rod
New York is so exciting. I just passed Alex Rodriguez. Or rather, he just passed me. He's in some kind of a parade today and the car he's riding in just drove by while I was walking down Sixth Avenue. I didn't grab my camera quickly enough to take a picture, but I'm sure there will be tons of pics of him all over the internet.

My Friend Naomi
I'm finally home! I'd tell you all about my road trip now, but I need to take a quick shower and run back out to meet one of my best friends in the whole world, Naomi! She's in town visiting today only, so we're meeting for a quick power-shopping session before she has to head off to a meeting.
Since I wrote about Naomi in "Save Karyn," she's had FOUR kids. Seriously... FOUR. She deserves to buy a lot of things today. Frank (her husband), this is your heads up.
Anywho... here's a picture of Naomi and me on her wedding day. I was her maid of honor.
And here's another picture of us at her wedding reception:
Noami's the one in the white dress (obviously) and I'm the legs in the air in the background. (I know... I'm classy.)

The Most Perfect Day
Today is the most perfect day.
I'm on a road trip with my sister, brother-in-law, Nora, Jack, and Beverly, and we're on our way to Rochester, NY to visit our step-sister, Tracy, and her family for the weekend. Bev and I are sitting in the way back of a Ford Explorer and we're just having the most delightful time. I was dreading sitting back here, but I'm all sprawled out with my feet up in the air... I feel like a kid again.
Anywho, as for the perfect day... It's gorgeous outside. GORGEOUS. The sun is shining brightly but it's not too hot outside and there's a beautiful breeze in the air. And the sky... *swoon*... I've never seen a sky as lovely as the one today. It's so blue and filled with all these big, puffy, cotton-ball clouds... it's magical. I don't mean to sound all peace and love and I swear I'm not high, it's just really amazing. I've taken pictures; I'll upload them later.
Oh wow... someone just farted. My money's on Nora. Little tooter.
Okay, back to gazing out the window...

Happy Birthday, Mom!
It's my mom's birthday today! Please wish her a happy day! She's coming for a visit at the end of the month, so we'll be celebrating then, but I made her this video for today.
If you don't know my family personally, it might be a little confusing to watch because I jump back and forth between footage of my mom with my sister and me when we were little and footage of my mom with Nora and Jack today. But I'm not a professional video editor, so sorry, and it's still cute, so whatever.
Okay, here goes:
The song is "The One Who Loves You The Most" by Brett Dennen.
Look Who's Back!
Look who's back!
It's Sammy the squirrel!
I was so excited when I saw him this morning. He was sleeping in a little ball, but then he woke up because listen to what happened!
Another squirrel came along and I can't figure out if Sammy likes him or not. (This one is definitely a boy because I saw something that looked like a weenie on the lower part of his belly.)
He was hanging around on the fire escape for a while...
...and then he peeked his head inside the door and woke Sammy up.
Rather than invite him in, Sammy started squeaking and making noise—it was a regular squirrel showdown.
The second squirrel eventually backed off so now Sammy's sleeping again, but he's got one eye open watching out for this other guy.
So now I'm curious about squirrel behavior. Why didn't Sammy let the other guy share his bed? Are squirrels territorial? Or, do you think they know each other and maybe the other guy is watching out for Sammy while he gets a good nap in? Will they take turns? Will Sammy let the other dude get some shut-eye after he gets his?
So many questions and not nearly enough motivation to search for the answers on the internet.
You know what I just realized, though? This is how it begins. This is how seemingly normal people become crazy squirrel people. (Or crazy cat people.) You are witnessing what could be the beginning of the end for me.
UPDATE: Omg, the other squirrel walked on Sammy's side of the fire escape door and Sammy lunged forward and attacked him. They definitely aren't friends.
I'm so angry I didn't have my camera ready to capture it. I'm getting out the video camera.
UPDATE 2: Oh wow... These two have had like four more fights, but I can't get the video camera working fast enough when I realize it.
Laura asked what Beverly and Elvis have been doing this whole time, so I'll tell you: Beverly has been sleeping on the bed and Elvis has been humping a t-shirt of mine in the corner. They really know how to defend their turf.

Anna Sui
I love Anna Sui. Her clothes are like eye candy and if I had the guts (and the money) to wear her stuff more often, I would. (I think I only have one blouse of hers.) If you are ever visiting New York, you must make the time to visit her SoHo boutique. Even if you don't plan on buying anything, it's fun to look at all the fun stuff she designs. She has awesome accessories and some great vintage pieces in the back.
Anywho, I'm writing this because I was browsing through an old issue of Elle magazine yesterday and I stumbled across this adorable umbrella that she makes:
It was part of an editorial layout and not paired with a matching dress like in the runway ensemble above, so it wasn't an overkill and was really cutesy.
Some more Anna Sui favorites from her Fall 2008 collection:

Staten Island Ferry
Weather permitting, my old roommate Scott and I are bringing our bikes on the Staten Island Ferry tomorrow (Monday) and are going to explore the borough. I'm aware of Staten Island's reputation (it's not so good), but I'm going into this with an open mind and hope to discover some nice things about the island while I'm there.
In my research, I found out that the video for "Papa Don't Preach" was filmed on the ferry and the island. I'm going to make Scott reenact parts of it with me, so check back in the evening for pictures and maybe video.

Danny Deckchair
From MSNBC... Lawn chair balloonist achieves his dream.
A 48-year-old gas station owner flew a lawn chair rigged with helium-filled balloons more than 200 miles across the Oregon desert Saturday, landing in a field in Idaho.
This reminds me of a movie I watched a few years ago called "Danny Deckchair." It was really funny; put it on your Netflix list.
John Adams and My Pet Squirrel
So I fell asleep during the second episode of the John Adams miniseries. Apparently, that's how exciting I find the Declaration of Independence to be. Oh, I'm kidding... the Declaration of Independence is a real hoot. Kids, pay attention in school. I was just tired, that's all. I'm going to re-watch the episode tonight.
Anywho, when I woke up this morning, Sammy the squirrel was gone. (Thank you, Kristen, for suggesting the unisex name that stuck.) To be honest, I was a little sad to see his bed of leaves abandoned, and I didn't disturb it because I'm secretly hoping the little sucker will come back. I was looking forward to helping him give birth and rearing the children. I imagined myself feeding them nuts, giving them baths, teaching them how to water ski. But there won't be any of that now, unless he comes back.
Oh well... happy Sunday!
And now, for your viewing pleasure... Twiggy the Water Skiing Squirrel:

John Adams
I just started watching "John Adams," the HBO miniseries starring Paul Giamatti. (Big Saturday night for me. Woo hoo.) Beginning with the Boston Massacre, it tells the story of the first fifty years of the United States.
I don't really want to watch it, but I heard it was good and I feel like I should watch it because it's about stuff I should know and did know at one point (in grade school when I learned it) but completely forgot. (I have no problem admitting this; I doubt many of you remember what the Intolerable Acts are.)
So anyway, I'm hoping it's one of those things that I end up enjoying even though I didn't want to watch it in the first place.
UPDATE: I just want to point out, even though I might have forgotten much of the history of this country, I can put almost every country in the world on a map with the exception of the continent of Africa. (That includes all of the Middle East, Asia, etc.) I need to work on Africa.
UPDATE 2: I just want to clarify... When I said, "That includes the Middle East, Asia, etc.," I was pointing out that I can put the countries in those areas on a map. I was not saying I thought they were in Africa. Somebody thought I was...
I should've written it like this: "I can put almost every country in the world on a map (including all of the Middle East and Asia!) with the exception of the continent of Africa. I need to work on Africa."
My New Pet Squirrel
There's a squirrel sleeping in my window sill. He's been there since morning.
Elvis first spotted him around nine o'clock or so, building a bed out of leaves.
Initially I didn't want him there (because you know he's probably got fleas, and also, squirrels are gross, like rats with tails), so I knocked on the window a few times hoping to scare him away. But the little bugger is stubborn and wouldn't leave, so I decided to let him get a good nap in.
He's been sleeping now for about ten hours and I'm not sure if I should wake him. Elvis is voting "yes" and wants him out, now.
Anywho... During the course of the day, we've made eye contact a few times and he seems kind of sweet. He's little, too, like maybe a baby. Also, although I can't be certain, I think he's a boy. I just get that feeling from him. I've been calling him "Buddy" but he needs a real name. Any suggestions?
