What I'm Reading Now

Michael lives in my neighborhood. I do not know him but I see him around all the time. This book (his first) was named one of the top 10 best books of 2007 by the NY Times Book Review. He also just won the Impac Dublin Literary Award.

What I Just Read

My rating:

(I need to cry for 5 stars.)

Janelle interviewed me eons ago for Salon.com. She's a sassy lady who's super nice. This is her first novel. It received rave reviews and I loved every minute of it.

Holy Boot Deal

I mentioned this morning that I was looking for boots. I want tall riding boots.

After looking extensively, I decided on these boots by Corso Como... the Sam.

See how they slant at the top? Aren't they cute? I want them in the cognac color.

So anywho, I decided to get them but did a search to see if anyone else was selling them for less than Zappos... they're $314 there. I found them at PiperLime for $295, and then I came across some boots at Macy's by Corso Como called the Sadie on sale for—wait for it —$145. Yes, they were originally $295, then they were marked down to $206, then they were marked down to $145. To make this even better, I found a coupon code for 20% off (Type "MACYSMOBILE" into the promo code box), so that made them $117.

Here they are:

They're chocolate instead of cognac but I can live with that. They're also a size 8 instead of a 7 and I can live with that. (I always have to buy boots bigger anyway to compensate for socks and because of my *ahem* muscular calves. Perhaps a darker color will be better for me anyhow, considering it won't draw as much attention to my muscular calves.) Other than that, they're pretty much the exact same boots.

So anyway, I'm excited about my new boots and I can't wait to get them. I'll keep you posted as to how they work out.

Cute Shoes

I'm looking for new boots and came across these shoes at Free People.

I like them. I like the way they paired them with tights.

Black Nail Polish

I usually don't like black nail polish, but I really like it with this look:

Sarah Michelle Gellar looks fabulous, doesn't she?

Wet

It's raining outside.

I'm going to tell you the story behind this in a minute.

UPDATE: Okay, I'm back. You might not be able to tell, but I'm soaked in the picture above (like, completely through my coat, down to my undies.) I walked in the rain to the Jacques Torres Chocolate store in DUMBO (a neighborhood in Brooklyn that's not too far away from me) because my friend Mark had to have this thing called "Wicked Hot Chocolate" for a ski trip he's taking to Tahoe after Christmas.

"Wicked Hot Chocolate" is hot chocolate made with allspice, cinnamon, ground, sweet ancho chili peppers, and smoked, ground chipotle chili peppers. It's supposed to be delicious and Mark is longing to drink it by the fire. (He's so gay.)

Now, you might ask why I'd walk somewhere in the rain (20 minutes each way) for a friend who didn't let me take a bath in his hotel room. Well, the answer to that is because he bought me this cute handbag for Christmas. Thank you, Mark! I've almost forgiven you.

BTW, Jacques Torres' chocolate store was on Martha before. It's right here in Brooklyn and the stuff they make is nummy. Check out their website.

My New Dress

Hello everyone! I just got back from Bloomingdale's and got a new dress for my party. Yay! It's by Trina Turk. Here are two pictures of it:

It's cute, right?

I wanted to show you both pictures because I didn't get a necklace to wear with it like the chick in the first pic is wearing. (I didn't think a necklace would work with it, honestly, and was surprised to see the model on TT's website wearing one.) Instead, I got these fabulous earrings and a chunky gold bracelet:

To give you an idea of how the earrings look as opposed to a necklace, I took a picture of myself with my computer. It's not the best, but it should do.

What do you think? Should I go back out tomorrow in search of a necklace or do they work? I'm thinking I like the earrings.

As for shoes, while I would've loved nothing more than to drop a few hundo a new pair, I resisted the urge and decided to wear these lovely Chloe heels I got last year:

(To all the men out there with shoe fetishes... you're welcome for the boner, you little pervs. To everyone else... yes, I'm pale. It's winter.)

So, what do you think about everything?

Please note before you comment: I have ZERO credit card debt, so no lectures, please. I rarely shop these days and live in leggings, jeans, t-shirts, hoodies, etc. It's okay to treat yourself to something nice every once in a while, which is what I've done on this fine November day. Besides, I'm a woman, dammit. Indulging my sensual side with sexy heels and a killer dress every now and then is necessary. (I know I didn't need to write this disclaimer, but I don't want you all to think I'm slipping back into my old ways.)

Pretty In Pink

I bought this cute hoodie for my nephew Jack today at Brooklyn Industries.

When I told my sister that it had pink lettering on it, she was like, "Pink?"

It doesn't look girly, does it? I mean, sure... pink's traditionally a feminine color, but a lot of men wear it today. Case in point, Ashton Kutcher in a pretty pink suit...

He's all dude in that thing... and that's a whole lotta pink.

And there's nothing girly about the guy from "The Office" in this pic...

Jim's looking good fo sho.

And how can I leave out the leading men in Bollywood as seen in this FABULOUS YouTube video...

India (and Aerosmith) knows what's up. Pink's not just for the ladies anymore.

(Poor Jack... Next week I'll have him I lavender booties.)

Love. This. Dress.

Jennifer Connelly at Elle magazine's Women In Hollywood tribute.

It reminds me of a lovely brand named Milly that a fabulous lil boutique in my neighborhood carries. (Diane T. - If you're ever in Cobble Hill, you must go.) Every time I swoon over something there, it's usually Milly.

Some good Milly...

If I were skinny and rich, I'd wear Milly every day.

PS - I don't like Jennifer Connelly's shoes, though. They don't go... right? I'd wear something silver.

Why I Love New York

So I was reading on Dlisted that Madonna, Demi and Ashton all went to some kind of Kabbalah ceremony in NYC...

And then I looked at the pictures and all I wanna know is...

Who in the hell is this girl and how do I get a cowboy hat like that?

Um... remember when I complained that it was too hot in NYC for October? Well it's not anymore and there's no excuse to be wearing this.

Shoot, even if it were, there's still no excuse for that.

Old Lady Shoes

My friend Naomi really wants me to get a pair of old-lady orthopedic shoes.

They're hot, huh?

Cute Baby T-Shirt

I recently had to buy a baby gift for someone so I went to the website of a store I love called Showroom 64. Showroom 64 is actually a British store, but they have a store in the West Village and I've had a link to it under the "Puppies & Babies" heading (to the left, at the bottom) forever.

Anyway, I found a cute onesie there and was going to buy it, but then I did a search and found it half price at a place called Renegade Babe ($15 as opposed to $30) so I ended up buying it there. Sorry, Showroom 64, but fifteen dollars is fifteen dollars! Here's the shirt:

It says, "For those about to nap, we salute you" on the front, and "Babies rock!" on the back. Isn't it cute?

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you in case you're looking for a cute baby gift!

BCBG Dress/Shirt

I bought this BCBG dress at Bloomingdale's in September and wore it to death this past season. I put it over skinny jeans or leggings and always got a hundred compliments on it. It's one of those things that you can throw on and run out of the house in, or dress up for a night out.

It's on sale at Bluefly right now for $82... so snatch one up if you are so inclined!

BCBG Charcoal Stretch Banded Short Dress @ Bluefly

I was wearing it in this picture taken on my birthday. (It was taken at 4 AM; forgive the smeared makeup.)

Attention Serial Shoppers

Is your life one BIG fashion emergency? Are you stumped on where to find the most sought-after styles, suffering from withdrawal or simply clothes-minded? Then you need a dose of FashionJunkie.com (FJ) — your shopping chaperon cluing you in on what to buy and where to buy it... before it’s passé.

FJ is the brainchild of Dara Fleischer, a self-confessed shopaholic. A few years back I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Fleischer at a book-signing of mine. Click here to see how fabulous she is.

Dara initially created FJ as a fun and frivolous diversion while she pursued a career in fashion and beauty publishing. Within weeks of launching, she quickly realized she was filling a void for the fashion challenged from across the globe, as she was inundated with emails requesting her advice for every conceivable quandary, from where to find discontinued lip-gloss to uplifting lingerie. After a series of high-profile jobs in PR and editorial, Dara inevitably followed her true calling by turning her passion for fashion into a full-time business. FashionJunkie’s mission is simple: to make the world a better-dressed place, one person at a time.

Dara currently shares an apartment in Manhattan along with her 107 pairs of shoes (each stored and labeled in their own plastic bin) and 68 handbags. She could be my idol.

Everyone, Please Meet Fashion Public

Bored with mainstream fashion that's produced for the masses?

So is my beautiful and brilliant friend Jill, the brains behind what will soon be every fashionista's favorite shopping website... fashionpublic.com.

Fashion Public is an online marketplace where customers can purchase boutique apparel and accessories directly from the designers who create them.

They're having a SAMPLE SALE in LONDON this Saturday, May 11th. Click the flier below for details and to RSVP.

PS... Jill was featured in an article in The Observor a couple weeks ago about female entrepreneurs.

THE E-RETAILER, JILL SIMON, ONLINE FASHION RETAILER -- American-born entrepreneur Jill Simon will launch fashionpublic.com, an online marketplace for independent fashion brands, in Britain this autumn... The retailer will target trendy individuals who don't follow the fashion pack.

'It's not Gucci, Pucci or Prada we'll be selling,' she says. 'This is for women who reject mass-market fashion.'

The website will provide designers with a route to market, without the overheads, in exchange for a commission on goods sold. Simon has been working with Sally Heale, an experienced fashion scout who has worked with store s such as Henri Bendel and Saks in the US. So far 150 brands have signed up. Simon says 80% of them have a proven track record, while the remainder will be newcomers breaking through.
