What I'm Reading Now

Michael lives in my neighborhood. I do not know him but I see him around all the time. This book (his first) was named one of the top 10 best books of 2007 by the NY Times Book Review. He also just won the Impac Dublin Literary Award.

What I Just Read

My rating:

(I need to cry for 5 stars.)

Janelle interviewed me eons ago for Salon.com. She's a sassy lady who's super nice. This is her first novel. It received rave reviews and I loved every minute of it.

Employee Of The Month

I never thought I'd say something like this, but I just watched Employee of the Month (it was on Showtime; don't ask), and the funniest part of the movie was Andy Dick.

Yeah, I know.

Golf On TV

When I was a little girl, my Dad would watch golf all the time on the weekends.

Nowadays, whenever it's on, I like to tune my TV to it. (Tune? What is this, the fifties?) Even though I don't watch it, I find the sound of it in the background really relaxing.

I just watched a promo for this show on VH1 and it looks soooooooo amazing.

I Love Maverick

Did anyone else just watch Top Gun? It was on Cinemax tonight. It's such a great movie, isn't it?

Remember how awesome Tom Cruise was before he became a punchline? Risky Business, Top Gun, Cocktail, Rain Man, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire—the list goes on.

I have to confess, I still love him. I can't help it. Nut case or not, he has a special place in my heart.

Improv Everywhere: Food Court Musical

I love this more than I loved Frozen Grand Central.

The improv group Improv Everywhere breaks into a musical at an LA shopping mall food court...

I would love to do something like this. It would be so fun! I might have mentioned this before, but one of the reasons I love New York is that you're really never too old to do anything... like, you can reinvent yourself at any time and it's perfectly acceptable. With that said, when I'm fifty years old, I'm going to start taking improv classes and try out for off-Broadway plays.

To read more about this, visit Improv Everywhere's website.

Mark and I playing with fun effects while video chatting:

First, how hot is Mark's club hand?

Second, don't I look like Uncle Junior?

Lipstick Jungle

Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid.

"I believe the label says Ricardo Bragini."

Then a miscast Andrew McCarthy swoops in to save the day...

"It might... but that dress could've only come from Victory Ford."

Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid.

The only reason I watch is because of Kirby.

Dog Wigs! Live And In-Person!

I've watched Ruth Regina, the woman who makes dog wigs, on David Letterman before, but I've never seen her dog wigs live and in-person... until today, that is!

They were at Zitomer, a large upscale pharmacy/beauty supply store on the Upper East Side, and I was so excited when I saw them. Who do you think buys them? They had a pretty big display.

In case you don't know about Ruth and her dog wigs, here she is showing them off on David Letterman:

Also, in case you're wondering, someone makes kitty wigs, too. (Thanks, Laura!)

Still can't get enough? More dog wig pictures from the New York Daily News.

Whoopi Goldberg?

Doesn't this traffic cop look like Whoopi Goldberg?

Go Jillian!

I totally forgot that the season finale of Project Runway is on tonight! Even though I don't like Christian, I have to admit, the boy is talented. But I'm still rooting for Jillian!

UPDATE: I'm watching on DVR and I'm a little behind, so don't tell me who wins. But here's my prediciton: All the collections were fabulous, but I think Jillian will win because her collection was the most wearable.

UPDATE 2: Okay, okay, okay... SPOILER ALERT SO STOP READING if you don't want to know who wins! But omg... the way that little mofo cried when he won... I now love him.

Step-Up 2

I just remembered something funny from last week. My mom and I were watching TV and a trailer for Step Up 2: The Streets came on, and she was like, "I really wanna see this. I'd love to be able to dance like that."

I blame this on Dancing With The Stars.

In case you haven't seen the trailer, this is how my mom wishes she could dance:

Intervention: Laney

I previously wrote about recording A&E's Intervention with my new DVR and a couple of people commented telling me to watch the episode with Laney.

From gfygrl...

you totally need to find the episode where the woman was an alcoholic and she took a whole bottle of pills - chased it with Malibu - told the producers she wanted to end it all and they had to call an ambulance. when the ambulance came - they couldn't do anything because she was refusing treatment - once she passed out they could though. and when she woke up in the hospital she said she didn't do any of the things they said and that her mother (who wasn't even there) spiked her drink to put her in the hospital.

she had a gazillion dollars or something from her divorce settlement (which she was still mega messed up about) and she was drinking it all away. the show opened with her coming back from a trip across the country and she hired a limo to drive her to and from because she hated to fly and she had to have her cat and its litter box with her in the limo. she actually took a limo (and the cat) to rehab. but because she couldn't keep her cat in the rehab - she didn't stick to the program.

CRAZY episode. you totally need to see it...
FYI... Laney's episode is re-running Saturday at 2pm EST. I can't wait.

PS - I don't mean to make fun of addiction; I know it's a serious matter that ruins lives and breaks up families. But a woman who rides around in a limo with her cat while drinking Malibu rum is must-see TV.

My Friend Brian on Oprah

I've mentioned before that I have a friend who works for Oprah. His name is Brian and we've been friends for over ten years.

Brian has been on Oprah before (Oprah and Gayle's Big Adventure, the favorite things show, etc.), but he appeared on the show again today and it was truly amazing. He loves Carol Burnett—loves—and was totally excited that she was going to be a guest. From Oprah's website:

The night before Carol landed in Chicago, Oprah says she ran into Brian, a senior associate producer of The Oprah Show, in the hallway. He told her he hadn't slept in two days. "I said, 'Really? Are you an insomniac?' He said, 'No, Carol Burnett's coming on.' And I said, 'Why haven't you slept?' And he said, 'I just love her so much!'"
So anyway, Oprah planned a little surprise for him and called him out to meet her when she was on. It was so fabulous... Brian cried and it was so funny and sweet. Here they are:

Lucky dog. My sister and I used to watch Carol Burnett's show religiously when we were little. We loved her, Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, and Vicki Lawrence so much. They were so funny.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this with you. Make sure you watch Oprah today!

Happy President's Day

Happy President's Day!

Last year I honored a president of a different kind, Elle Woods, president of Delta Nu sorority, and also gave a shout-out to one of the greatest fictitious first ladies, Martha Logan of 24.

This year, I was trying to think of someone else to honor and received the following email from a friend of mine named Gregg. Here it is:

Hey there Karyn--

Just wanted to wish you a happy President's Day. I'd like to honor President Thomas J. Whitmore (as played by Bill Pullman), who was a truly kick-butt President in Independence Day. I want to live in a world led by Bill Pullman.
Excellent suggestion, Gregg, excellent suggestion. As per your request, here he is... President Thomas J. Whitmore as played by Bill Pullman:

OMG Oogy

I love Oprah. I love this dog.

When he was just a puppy, Oogy was living in a hell on earth. He was tied to a stake and used as bait for pit bulls in a dogfighting ring. "He'd been thrown in a cage and left to die, and the police raided the facility," Larry says. "He was brought to Ardmore Animal Hospital, and they saved him."

Dr. Bianco, a veterinarian, says Oogy was still a puppy when he first treated the dog's severe damage. "He basically had the side of his face ripped off, his jaw was crushed, his skull was damaged," he says. "He's lucky to be alive."
I will never understand how people can be so cruel.

Happy Valentine's Day

I've created the following playlist for you. You should be able to listen to the full songs except for #1, 2, & 8. (I can't find the full versions for those, so you'll have to listen to snippets.)

Tears Of Sorrow Joy Empathy

I am so PMS-ing. Earlier today I cried over Dog Whisperer. Then I cried over a promo for Carson Kressley's new show, How to Look Good Naked. (It was more over the quote from the NY Times, "The greatest triumph of cognitive therapy that reality television has ever produced.") And now I just cried over Ugly Betty. (When she—oops! Scroll down to the bottom of this post because it's a spoiler!)

I'm not even sad—I'm just moved, that's all.

Sometimes I love nothing more than to cry (doing so aloud makes it better) and then smile because it's so satisfying.

Tears of empathy, that's what they are. Tears that say, "I feel what it is you're going through, whether it be pain, sorrow, joy, happiness, nervousness, or excitement."

Grey's Anatomy is on right now. They just showed Bailey having a breakdown in the promo. Tears are gonna flow again, I can feel it.

Scroll down for Betty comment!
