I love FreshDirect. (For those people reading who are not from New York, FreshDirect is an online grocer that delivers food to residences in the NYC area.) I used to order from them all the time but haven't in a while, but that's all going to change!
You see, because I'm sick and can't go to the store, I ordered a bunch of food from them (healthy stuff—fresh veggies, fruit, and, of course, some DayQuil) that's going to be delivered tomorrow. The only delivery slot that was available was from 3 to 5pm, so I took it but then sent them a message asking if there was any way they could deliver it earlier because I have a fever and the flu. (The fever came back, btw, when the Motrin wore off.) It was worth a shot, right? Well, low and behold I just got an email from a nice guy named Michael saying that my order is now going to arrive between 9 and 11am. How nice is that?
If you are from the New York area, I encourage you to give FreshDirect a try if you haven't. The food is fresh and delicious and the customer service is wonderful!
Thank you, FreshDirect!
BTW, I have a suggestion to FreshDirect... you should have a "sick basket" already put together for people like me. You know, like one-click shopping. It can have chicken noodle soup in it, lots of vitamin C fruits, crackers, medicine, etc. Good idea, right?

My Neighbors and Elvis
Okay so I just want to take this opportunity to tell you all how much I love my neighbors, Kate and Sarah. I'm so happy we've become friends; they couldn't be nicer people. Not only did they watch my little munchkin Elvis while I was away, but Kate called this morning to see if I needed anything because I'm sick. (I took her up on the offer; she got me some Starbucks. Thank you, Kate.) They're just kind and thoughtful and the world needs more people like them.
So anyway, I'm feeling a little bit better. The Motrin I had was super-duper strong (I got it from the doctor when I had strep throat), so it broke my fever pretty quickly. Having a fever is so terrible... I think I wrote about this the last time I had one. I mean, the way your body aches and your skin hurts, and the chills and headache you get... yuck, yuck, yuck... all of it.
And now back to Elvis (I'm all over the place today; sorry... it's the illness), someone asked how he's doing. He's fine, thanks for inquiring. Kate sent me an email while I was away saying that, while Sarah was petting him one day, he started drooling. I was like, "Oh, he does that." I wrote about him doing this once before on my old website and have since imported it to this blog. Here's a link to it with an awesome picture of him drooling.
BTW, he's sitting on my lap as I type this. Here's a picture:
Okay, bye bye!

So I'm Sick. Again.
I started feeling achy two nights ago, and then yesterday I flew home and continued to feel achy, and now today I feel like I'm going to die. I have a slight fever (101.5) and my chest and head are congested. My whole body hurts, my skin.
I just took a Motrin and some cough syrup.
I've gotten sick like half a dozen times this year, and I'm somewhat of a germaphobe, too, so I don't know why. I'm thisclose to wearing a Sars mask wherever I go.

Awesomeness
I wrote this note to my sister when I was about 10 or 11 or so. (I'm guessing.) I cannot begin to tell you how much I love it.
Oh, the drama that comes along with raising two girls very close in age.

Great Great Aunt Minnie Update
So I showed my grandpa the picture of Great Great Aunt Minnie today when I went to visit him, and as soon as he looked at it he shook his head.
"Oh... Aunt Minnie," he said. "She was an old maid."
"Yeah," I replied, "but why?"
"Well, she tried to be a nun but didn't make it."
"Why didn't she make it?"
"Because she was supposed to fast but couldn't."
"Why couldn't she?"
My grandpa thought about this for a moment and then said, "Because she liked to eat, I guess."
(I mean, does it get any better than this?)
"Grandpa," I said, after a bit. "Do you remember anything else about Aunt Minnie except that she was never married and liked to eat?"
He shook his head. "No... I mean, she liked to sit by the fire, but everyone did in Ireland because it was always so damn cold."
So, that's it, everyone... that's Aunt Minnie's legacy. She was never married, liked to eat, was rejected from the nunnery, and could occasionally be found sitting by the fire because Ireland was so damn cold. The end.

Brown and Gold
My high school's colors were brown and gold. Terrible combo, isn't it?
We were the Carmel Corsairs, which is a fancy name for pirate.

My Great Great Aunt Minnie
I found this picture in an old photo album of my grandpa's.
One day Nora and Jack are going to have a photo of me like this in their photo album. "Aunt Karyn Bosnak. Never married."
Shoot, I love this woman. She could be my idol. I mean, I love that the only thing my grandpa wrote about her is "never married." Like that sums up her life. Not, "Aunt Minnie... loved to knit." Or, "Aunt Minnie... loved children." I mean, here it is almost a hundred years later, and the only thing anyone knows about poor ole Aunt Minnie is that she was never married. Sorry, Great Great Aunt Minnie. I'm sure you had many other redeeming qualities.
UPDATE: I'm going to ask my grandpa about her tomorrow morning and I hope to learn more things about her.

Dear Tooth Fairy...
My mom and step-dad live in a pretty big house and have recently been thinking about downsizing, so they've encouraged my sister and I to go through the boxes of stuff we still have there and either throw the stuff away or move it to New York.
Now, I'm the kind of person who saves everything (and I mean everything), so every card, every picture, every memory of my childhood is tucked away in a box somewhere or other. Most of the stuff I've found so far is crap, but amongst it are a few gems, such as this letter I wrote to the tooth fairy when I was about five or six years old...
"Will you still give me money."
How fabulous is that? I mean, I was five.

My Grandpa
So sorry for the lack of updates, but I'm still at my mom's house and I've been crazy-busy.
(You know what's weird? For the longest time I would say "I'm going home" when I was going to my mom's... like I still considered her house my house. But I just typed "at my mother's house" without thinking. Nice to see that I've finally grown up.)
Anyway, my grandpa broke his hip and is staying at a rehab facility while it heals, so I've been going there to visit him daily with my mom. (A rehab facility is kind of like a nursing home, but not quite.) It's sad to see him getting older and breaking down because he's always been such a strong man, but it's amazing to see his children come together to make things easier for him.
My mom has eight brothers and sisters (nine kids total) and they all take turns going to visit my grandpa so he never has to be alone. The closeness of all of them and the dedication to him is amazing to me. In the end, it's your family who will always be there for you.... I realize this more and more as I get older. It's no secret that I'm close to my family... now I know where I get it from.
One funny thing before I go... My grandpa was born in Belfast and has always been feisty, with a hot Irish temper. One morning while he was doing his exercises, I caught him looking around at all the other patients/residents there with a scowl on his face. When I asked him if he knew any of them or has made any friends there, he looked at me like I was crazy. "No," he said. "They're all old people."
God love him... he's 86.

It's Getting Warmer
This morning I was running around town with my mom and I said, "I think it's getting warmer outside." She looked at me with a big smile and said, "Oh, it is! It's nine today!"
Tomorrow I'm going to teach her how to use the computer. Class is set to start promptly at nine and won't break until noon. In addition to teaching basic computer skills, other subjects I'm going to cover include using an iPod (she got one for Christmas), video chatting (she got a webcam, too), transferring pictures to her computer from a memory card (she's had a digital camera for a while now, but she still gets all her pics printed), emailing those pictures (she still sends my sister and I hard copies through the mail), and possibly eBay.
Today she learned what the desktop was. We have a long road ahead of us.

I Rode The JetBlue Shortbus
Okay, good thing I gave myself time to deal with JFK today. After getting my boarding pass and going through security, I walked through a maze to get where I thought my gate was, only to be told I had to walk back outside and take a little JetBlue shortbus to it.
Pain. In. Arse.
I'm now waiting at some makeshift gate which seems more like a trailer than an actual airport. JetBlue must still be building its terminal.

Going To Chicago
Beverly and I are on the AirTrain right now going to JFK. (I usually have to fly out of LaGuardia to go to Chicago, but I'm flying JetBlue and they fly out of JFK.)
I'm making strides with my travel... I'm a terrible planner and always seem to be running late when it comes to leaving for the airport. In October, I missed a flight I was booked on to LA, and the last time I flew, I had to beg the ticket agent to give me a boarding pass because I missed the check-in cut-off by one minute. (She did.)
Anyway, my flight leaves at 9:30, so I have loads of time. (Patting myself on the back right now.)
Okay, bye bye!

Intervention: Laney
I previously wrote about recording A&E's Intervention with my new DVR and a couple of people commented telling me to watch the episode with Laney.
From gfygrl...
you totally need to find the episode where the woman was an alcoholic and she took a whole bottle of pills - chased it with Malibu - told the producers she wanted to end it all and they had to call an ambulance. when the ambulance came - they couldn't do anything because she was refusing treatment - once she passed out they could though. and when she woke up in the hospital she said she didn't do any of the things they said and that her mother (who wasn't even there) spiked her drink to put her in the hospital.FYI... Laney's episode is re-running Saturday at 2pm EST. I can't wait.
she had a gazillion dollars or something from her divorce settlement (which she was still mega messed up about) and she was drinking it all away. the show opened with her coming back from a trip across the country and she hired a limo to drive her to and from because she hated to fly and she had to have her cat and its litter box with her in the limo. she actually took a limo (and the cat) to rehab. but because she couldn't keep her cat in the rehab - she didn't stick to the program.
CRAZY episode. you totally need to see it...
PS - I don't mean to make fun of addiction; I know it's a serious matter that ruins lives and breaks up families. But a woman who rides around in a limo with her cat while drinking Malibu rum is must-see TV.

My Friend Brian on Oprah
I've mentioned before that I have a friend who works for Oprah. His name is Brian and we've been friends for over ten years.
Brian has been on Oprah before (Oprah and Gayle's Big Adventure, the favorite things show, etc.), but he appeared on the show again today and it was truly amazing. He loves Carol Burnett—loves—and was totally excited that she was going to be a guest. From Oprah's website:
The night before Carol landed in Chicago, Oprah says she ran into Brian, a senior associate producer of The Oprah Show, in the hallway. He told her he hadn't slept in two days. "I said, 'Really? Are you an insomniac?' He said, 'No, Carol Burnett's coming on.' And I said, 'Why haven't you slept?' And he said, 'I just love her so much!'"So anyway, Oprah planned a little surprise for him and called him out to meet her when she was on. It was so fabulous... Brian cried and it was so funny and sweet. Here they are:

Lucky dog. My sister and I used to watch Carol Burnett's show religiously when we were little. We loved her, Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, and Vicki Lawrence so much. They were so funny.
Anyway, I just wanted to share this with you. Make sure you watch Oprah today!

Happy President's Day
Happy President's Day!
Last year I honored a president of a different kind, Elle Woods, president of Delta Nu sorority, and also gave a shout-out to one of the greatest fictitious first ladies, Martha Logan of 24.
This year, I was trying to think of someone else to honor and received the following email from a friend of mine named Gregg. Here it is:
Hey there Karyn--Excellent suggestion, Gregg, excellent suggestion. As per your request, here he is... President Thomas J. Whitmore as played by Bill Pullman:
Just wanted to wish you a happy President's Day. I'd like to honor President Thomas J. Whitmore (as played by Bill Pullman), who was a truly kick-butt President in Independence Day. I want to live in a world led by Bill Pullman.

Northern Illinois University
Sorry for the delay in posting this, but my thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the shootings at Northern Illinois University. Stay safe, everyone!

OMG Oogy
I love Oprah. I love this dog.
When he was just a puppy, Oogy was living in a hell on earth. He was tied to a stake and used as bait for pit bulls in a dogfighting ring. "He'd been thrown in a cage and left to die, and the police raided the facility," Larry says. "He was brought to Ardmore Animal Hospital, and they saved him."I will never understand how people can be so cruel.
Dr. Bianco, a veterinarian, says Oogy was still a puppy when he first treated the dog's severe damage. "He basically had the side of his face ripped off, his jaw was crushed, his skull was damaged," he says. "He's lucky to be alive."

Westminster Dog Show
I'm watching the Westminster Dog Show right now and absolutely love the Bichon.
How cute is he? He was trotting around the circle like he owned it... so adorable. He didn't win his group though; the Standard Poodle did.
The Yorkies (toy group) are tomorrow night. Beverly can barely contain her excitement.
UPDATE: Now the Briard is on. I love this breed. A really cute one lives in my neighborhood and he looks like a big Yorkie to me. Here are some cute photos of Briards I found on Flickr:

I'm watching Rock of Love right now because I missed it last night, and all I wanna know is...
What's going on with this girl's hair? (She usually looks like this.)
UPDATE: Okay, okay... someone did her hair like this on purpose for a photo shoot. But still... the photo shoot ended long before elimination; she had plenty of time to comb this out, but she didn't.

Grammy Notes
Prince is so cool.
Miley Cyrus looks 40.
Loved Rihanna's haircut, blue dress and florescent nail polish on the red carpet.
Morris Day and the Time and Rihanna with a lil bit of Michael Jackson? Oh ee oh ee oh... Ella ella ella... Ay ay ay... Mama say mama sah mama goot-za. Didn't work but I loved the attempt.
OMG... Cirque du Soleil/Beatles thing = AH-MA-ZING. Such talent... I'm crying.
Okay, now Kanye's performing "Stronger." All I keep thinking about is his mother and it makes me want to cry again. I'm so proud of him for keeping it together. This is an AWESOME show so far.
Okay, now he started singing about his mother. I'm crying again. I want to marry him. Or at least sleep with him.
John Legend is playing the piano right now for Fergie. I wish he were singing. One of my favorite songs ever is "Refuge (When It's Cold Outside)" from the album "Get Lifted."
Cher can't move her forehead.
Beyonce is one hot bitch. OMG, I LOVE ME SOME TINA TURNER! She looks constipated, though. Has she been shopping at American Apparel? She shouldn't be wearing silver lame—she looks like a bumper—but the fact that she is, kinda makes me love her more.
I think dirty boys like Dave Grohl are sexy.
I can't believe the director cued the music to play over Kanye when he won. Especially when he talked about his mother. Loser. BTW, how much do you love his jacket that lights up?
I mean no disrespect, but Aretha Franklin needs to lose a little weight.
Kid Rock = Snooze.
So Rihanna just won and my sister just called. She was laughing hysterically, saying that her husband (my brother-in-law) looked up at the TV and asked, "Is that Lisa Bonet?" He was totally serious, really thought it was her.
Why did Cuba Gooding Jr. introduce Amy Winehouse? What does he have to do with music? Who thought this would be a good idea?
So Amy Winehouse... a week ago she was smoking crack, now she's shimmying on stage. She looks uncomfortable, awkward, but she gets an A+++++++ for effort.
Okay, now she gets a C for thanking her incarcerated husband.
R.I.P. Dan Folgelberg. "Longer than there's been stars up in the heaven..."
OMG!!!!! Andrea Bocelli. I love him. If he sings, I'm going to cry again. Oh, here he goes, he's singing, I'm going to cry. He reminds me of Elvis, my cat. I can't explain it, but they carry themselves the same way.
Herbie Hancock? Seriously? I LOVE Joni Mitchell, but I'm a little surprised by this.
Okay, he's so sweet up there. It's been 43 years since a jazz musician has won. I'm happy for him.

The Grammys, Nora, Icky Thump
To celebrate the Grammy Awards tonight, I thought I'd post a video of Nora dancing to "Icky Thump" from four-time nominee, The White Stripes. (I love The White Stripes; I think Jack White is sexy.)
The sound on the video isn't the best because I was playing the song on my computer while I was recording her on my computer, but it's still cute, nonetheless. Nora had never heard the song before this, but instantly liked it. The best part is when she spins at 0:53 in and when she plays the air drums 1:55 in.
Open Letter To Vimeo
Dear Vimeo,
Every single time I upload a video to your site, I get a message telling me that you are experiencing an unusually high number of uploads at the moment and that my video is waiting in line to be converted. Every. Single. Time. There are no exceptions to this.
How about you start to expect an unusually high number of uploads all the time? That way, "unusually high" can become the norm and you can save this message and use it only when you actually have an unusually high number of uploads.
I like Vimeo because it's a small community and I don't want to put videos of my precious niece and nephew on YouTube. However, constant glitches like this make it irritating to use. I don't mean to be rude, but a two-minute video should not take 45 minutes to convert.
Thank you,
Karyn
UPDATE: Going on an hour.
UPDATE 2: Going on two hours.
UPDATE 3: Three hours.
UPDATE 4: Fours hours later, it's finally converted!
Snow
It's snowing! It's snowing!
It's been really windy all day, and now it's finally snowing. I'm going out to get something to eat now, and I'm going to bring my camera.
UPDATE: It stopped as soon as I got outside. I was able to take this though.
It was really neat because the snowflakes were super big and blowing everywhere.

Best Search Words Ever
I use Site Meter on this blog, which allows me to not only check the traffic, but also lets me know where hits are coming from, even if it's from a Google search. For instance, if someone stumbles upon this blog because a Google search led them here, it lets me know what words they typed in to get here. I've seen some strange ones over the years (which I've been compiling and will share with you sometime soon), but my favorite, by far, is one I saw today.
Yes... "How to show my Yorkie I'm the pack leader."
Good to see I'm not the only one with this problem.
The Sartorialist
You might already know about this blog, but if not, I'd like to introduce you to The Sartorialist.
The Sartorialist is a style blog helmed by Scott Schuman, a former showroom owner who used to work for Valentino. From his bio...
I started The Sartorialist simply to share photos of people that I saw on the streets of New York that I thought looked great. When I worked in the fashion industry (15 years), I always felt that there was a disconnect between what I was selling in the showroom and what I was seeing real people (really cool people) wearing in real life.
Some of my recent faves...

Me Right Now
Vimeo has a collection of videos on their site called "Me Right Now," where they encourage users to take quick videos of themselves doing whatever it is they happen to be doing and upload them.
This is me right now... makeupless and in need of a shower. (We all have those days.) It's not a video, but a quick four-shot thing I took using Photo Booth.
Take a picture or video of YOU RIGHT NOW (meaning don't go put on makeup, change your clothes, or do your hair) and post a link to it in the comments section!

Polls Closed!
So the polls closed on the east coast 45 minutes ago and Hilary is expected to be the winner in New York and New Jersey. It's so exciting! I'm going to be glued to CNN all night long.
BTW, I ended up voting for Obama.
Daily Candy
Did anyone else read the Daily Candy email today? It's absolutely hilarious. (And gross, too... but mostly hilarious.) It's about... well...
February 5, 2008 | Daily Candy: BungGlow 8
It has come to our attention that it is no longer acceptable for your bunghole to be, well, brown. (Yeah, we said bunghole.) And South Beach Skin Solutions has developed a lightening gel that is safe for that sensitive area (no, we have not tried it).
The natural product claims to give your poopshooter “a fresher, more youthful look” by making it blend in with your natural skin tone. (Seriously?)
Elvis In A "Stuff On My Cat" Video
Someone told me that Elvis made the cut for a Stuff On My Cat video by Ultra Kawaii and I couldn't be more thrilled. Ultra Kawaii means "so cute it hurts" in Japanese. According to their website, their goal is to showcase the cutest pets on the planet every week. He's about 1:27 in...
They describe him as "one of the more stylish cats." I'm so proud of my little bugger!

Super Tuesday
Is it weird that I'm excited for Super Tuesday?
I'm a registered Democrat in the state of New York so I'm eligible to vote. (In case you don't know, voter eligibility for the primaries differs from state to state.) I was feeling Obama for a long time, but then I started feeling Hilary, but then Hilary turned me off because she's such. a. politician. So now I'm feeling Obama again.
Who else is voting?!
PS - I know people say you should keep your political views to yourself, but it's my country, dammit! And my blog! So I'm going to say what I want, when I want!
PPS - Yes, I'm back from vacay, but I'm still at the airport, so I'll update about it later!

Attention Foodies!
Actually, attention EVERYONE!
I have some very exciting news to share with you... My step-sister, Tracy, is a finalist in the Pillsbury Bake-Off!
I know, I know, I know... you're probably all thinking, You have a step-sister? Why, yes, I do! I have two, in fact, and one step-brother—but those other two aren't important right now. The important one is Tracy.
Tracy is the queen of the kitchen, the ruler of the range, the owner of the oven, the—okay, I'll stop. Bottom line, she makes tasty treats that would make your mouth water, your taste buds tango, and your tummy ache (in a good way).
And she has a cooking blog. Rah Cha Chow, that's what it's called. Cute n' clever name, isn't it? Check it out.
The reason I'm telling you about Tracy is that, out of the tens of thousands of people who submitted a recipe to this year's Pillsbury Bakeoff contest, Tracy was picked as one of the 100 finalists. The big competition goes down in April, and the cook with the best recipe wins—get this—a million dollars!
Here's a little history about the contest. It's been going on for 43 years.
And here's a link to Tracy's recipe: Jalepeno Popper Cups. It's the perfect Super Bowl party goodie!
Vote for Tracy's recipe! Please, please, please! It's kind of a pain because you have to register, but please do it anyway!
Okay, off to the Bahamas now!
xx
