What I'm Reading Now

Michael lives in my neighborhood. I do not know him but I see him around all the time. This book (his first) was named one of the top 10 best books of 2007 by the NY Times Book Review. He also just won the Impac Dublin Literary Award.

What I Just Read

My rating:

(I need to cry for 5 stars.)

Janelle interviewed me eons ago for Salon.com. She's a sassy lady who's super nice. This is her first novel. It received rave reviews and I loved every minute of it.

Stella McCartney for LeSportSac

Stella McCartney is coming out with a line for LeSportSac. I looked at it online and thought it was just okay, but I just visited the store and it's so much cuter in person.

I like the two-tone solid cream and purpley-grey design the best. And the bunny backpack for kids is adorable. (But at $120 it's a little pricey.)

I'll post a picture of it when I get home. In the meantime, check it out!

(I need a cameraphone!)

UPDATE: Okay, I'm home. Here's a link to the collection. Again, this stuff isn't that cute on the website, but in person it is.

This is the bag that I saw and loved:

It's big, like I wouldn't use it for a purse, but it would be perfect to pack for a weekend away at my sister's house.

I also love this bunny backpack for kids:

Ugh

I still have a fever. Ugh. This is ridiculous.

So I'm Sick. Again.

I started feeling achy two nights ago, and then yesterday I flew home and continued to feel achy, and now today I feel like I'm going to die. I have a slight fever (101.5) and my chest and head are congested. My whole body hurts, my skin.

I just took a Motrin and some cough syrup.

I've gotten sick like half a dozen times this year, and I'm somewhat of a germaphobe, too, so I don't know why. I'm thisclose to wearing a Sars mask wherever I go.

It's Getting Warmer

This morning I was running around town with my mom and I said, "I think it's getting warmer outside." She looked at me with a big smile and said, "Oh, it is! It's nine today!"

Tomorrow I'm going to teach her how to use the computer. Class is set to start promptly at nine and won't break until noon. In addition to teaching basic computer skills, other subjects I'm going to cover include using an iPod (she got one for Christmas), video chatting (she got a webcam, too), transferring pictures to her computer from a memory card (she's had a digital camera for a while now, but she still gets all her pics printed), emailing those pictures (she still sends my sister and I hard copies through the mail), and possibly eBay.

Today she learned what the desktop was. We have a long road ahead of us.

I Rode The JetBlue Shortbus

Okay, good thing I gave myself time to deal with JFK today. After getting my boarding pass and going through security, I walked through a maze to get where I thought my gate was, only to be told I had to walk back outside and take a little JetBlue shortbus to it.

Pain. In. Arse.

I'm now waiting at some makeshift gate which seems more like a trailer than an actual airport. JetBlue must still be building its terminal.

Going To Chicago

Beverly and I are on the AirTrain right now going to JFK. (I usually have to fly out of LaGuardia to go to Chicago, but I'm flying JetBlue and they fly out of JFK.)

I'm making strides with my travel... I'm a terrible planner and always seem to be running late when it comes to leaving for the airport. In October, I missed a flight I was booked on to LA, and the last time I flew, I had to beg the ticket agent to give me a boarding pass because I missed the check-in cut-off by one minute. (She did.)

Anyway, my flight leaves at 9:30, so I have loads of time. (Patting myself on the back right now.)

Okay, bye bye!

Super Tuesday

Is it weird that I'm excited for Super Tuesday?

I'm a registered Democrat in the state of New York so I'm eligible to vote. (In case you don't know, voter eligibility for the primaries differs from state to state.) I was feeling Obama for a long time, but then I started feeling Hilary, but then Hilary turned me off because she's such. a. politician. So now I'm feeling Obama again.

Who else is voting?!

PS - I know people say you should keep your political views to yourself, but it's my country, dammit! And my blog! So I'm going to say what I want, when I want!

PPS - Yes, I'm back from vacay, but I'm still at the airport, so I'll update about it later!

I couldn't find a place to bungee jump, so this was the next best thing.

PS: It was kind of scary.

Highlights

Okay, I'm back. My highlights weren't light enough so I asked the lady to redo them. Her name is Lisa, but everyone at the salon kept calling her Gina, so I don't know...

Okay, my hair... it's naturally brown. For some reason, certain colorists seem to think they can't get it really blonde, but it can be done and has been done on several occasions. Example 1:

Pretty Highlights

I have a million more pictures like the above to, but you get the point—my hair can get pretty blond.

I was very clear when I went into the salon this morning. I said, "I want bold bright blond highlights. I do not want them to be gold or yellow—I want them to be white." Lisa/Gina smiled and said okay, and then proceeded to give me highlights that not only weren't white, but they weren't yellow either—hey were orange.

Before I continue, here's a quick lesson on the stages of hair lightening. (No, I'm not a professional, I've just done a bit of research.) When hair is lightened, it goes from black to brown to red to orange to yellow to white. So, when a colorist gives me orange or yellow hair, it's either because they didn't leave the bleach on my hair long enough or they didn't use a high enough volume developer.

With regards to Lisa/Gina, she colored my roots before giving me highlights, and I think she pulled some of that color through to the ends of my hair. This ended up darkening some of the highlights I already had, and then on top of that she didn't make the new highlights bright enough... so my hair actually looked darker when she was finished than before she began.

Ugh. That was a lot to type on a BlackBerry.

I'm home now, so I'm switching to my computer. BRB.

Okay, I'm back. Many a times I've walked out of a salon with color I didn't ask for and didn't like, simply because I was too nervous to ask them to redo it... BUT NO MORE! I explained to Lisa/Gina that it wasn't blond enough and asked her to redo it. At first she tried to convince me that it was blond enough, but after a while I could tell even she didn't believe herself, so she did it again. She mixed up some bleach, added more foils, let me sit there, and when she washed it out... the highlights were brighter, but yellow. Here I am:

It looks more yellow in real life, I promise.

Anyway, a lot of colorists seem to get really irritated when non-professionals like myself tell them what to do, but I've been getting my hair highlighted for about twenty years, so I know what works and what doesn't work on me. Plain and simple, Lisa/Gina didn't leave the bleach on my hair long enough. She only let the highlights process for, like, 15 minutes when every other good colorist let's it process for 45.

So, the plan is this: I'm going back to the salon at 3pm so she can do it again. I didn't pay for it yet because it's not what I asked for. I was polite, though. I said, "I don 't want to be rude, but I'm not going to tell you I like something if I I don't like it." She understood.

So anyway, check back later for an update!

Cell Phone Ramblings

I'm getting my hair done right now (highlights—I haven't had them in ages) and the magazine selection here isn't great, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to vent about my cell phone.

First, I use T-Mobile as my service provider, and they're terrible. I constantly find myself stuck somewhere without a signal and it's the most irritating thing ever. I'm trying to hold out until my contract expires in August, but I'm not sure I'll be able. The thing is, my BlackBerry has been acting up lately and I'm worried it's going to die on me. A few months ago it took a pretty serious tumble (while in the hands of my darling niece, Nora) and I've been getting error messages ever since. The messages cause the whole thing to freeze up, sometimes for hours at a time, and it bugs me, big time. My fear is that one day soon I'm going to breakdown and buy a new one before my contract ends, which would mean I'd be stuck with T-mobile for another year and that wouldn't be good.

Now on to my next problem... When I do finally defect from T-Mobile, I'm not sure which wireless carrier to go with. I was planning on going with Verizon (as opposed to AT&T) because they have better service on the east coast, but they don't have the phone I want. I want the BlackBerry Curve because it has a camera on it (and I'd love to take a picture of my hair right now and post it, but I can't), but Verizon doesn't carry the Curve. They carry the BlackBerry Pearl, but that one doesn't have a full keyboard and I like a full keyboard. AT&T carries the Curve, but they also carry the iPhone which, even though I've made fun of it in the past, I have to admit is kind of cool.

Okay, gotta go get my hair washed.

The Sad State Of...

BTW, I realize it's January, but I need to address the sad state of swimwear in New York right now. I'm going to the Bahamas next week and I need a new suit.

Part of my problem is that I refuse to go north of Houston, but still... nobody is carrying them right now. Don't most designers have a resort line?

Smokey Subway Station

So I'm waiting for the F train right now at the Broadway/Lafayette stop in SoHo and, for some reason, the station is filled with smoke.

But here's how dumb I am. I saw that it was filled with smoke before I entered, but I still swiped my MTA card and went inside anyway.

I guess I thought that if something was really the matter, someone would've closed the entrance. Also, other people were going in, so I thought I might as well go in, too.

Okay, the train came and I'm on it right now, so if you are reading this it means I'm alive, as it will send when I arrive at my stop and walk back upstairs to street-level.

To those of you who worried about be between paragraphs three and four, thank you. To those of you who didn't, you might wanna take a long, hard look at yourself tonight and try to figure out at what point it was that your heart turned to stone.

At The Apple Store In Soho...

Getting the battery replaced in my computer and realizing I need highlights and a tan.

(And a smaller forehead.)

UPDATE: What is this about a new ultra-slim Mac? No, I didn't see it, but I didn't really look for it either. I went to the Genius Bar, played with an iPhone, took the picture above and posted it, and then fell prey to the Leopard marketing and blew $100 on it.

Re: the iPhone, I asked a guy there if they were ever gonna make one with buttons because I like the buttons on my BlackBerry.

After laughing at me he said, "You only like buttons because you've never known anything not to have them."

I was like, "No, I like buttons because they're more accurate when I type."

"The iPhone is accurate," he replied, getting all defensive.

I was like, "Really? Because I just tried to type the word 'hello' and it came out as 'hrlio.'"

My New Headphones

I got the JVC noise-cancelling headphones that I wrote about last month for Christmas.

I'm trying them out for the first time right now on the train and I have to say they work really well! As soon as I turn them on I hear a little "shoop!", almost like a suction, and then all the background noise disappears. I highly recommend them!

I'm listening to "Arms of a Woman" by Amos Lee right now on my iPod. Great song, give it a listen.

I'm Crazy

So I'm finally leaving. I decided at around six o'clock tonight that I didn't like the dress I bought because it was too black, so I went to a local boutique and bought a Catherine Malandrino dress to wear instead. It's much cuter. I'll post pics when I get back. Bye!
