What I'm Reading Now

Michael lives in my neighborhood. I do not know him but I see him around all the time. This book (his first) was named one of the top 10 best books of 2007 by the NY Times Book Review. He also just won the Impac Dublin Literary Award.

What I Just Read

My rating:

(I need to cry for 5 stars.)

Janelle interviewed me eons ago for Salon.com. She's a sassy lady who's super nice. This is her first novel. It received rave reviews and I loved every minute of it.

Barbara Walters' Most Fascinating People

Am I the only person who doesn't find Thomas Beatie, the pregnant man, all that fascinating?

I mean, he was born a woman, that's how he's able to have babies.

Oh, Zerpener!

I just woke up from a nap. I had a dream that Robin Williams and I went to Dennis Hopper's house (he lived in the West Village.) He had a pink parrot hanging in the corner and we started talking about an old TV show that one of them starred in called "Zerpener."

I don't know what any of it means, but I'm going to start saying "Oh, Zerpener!" all the time now, kind of like, "Zut alors!"

Someone asked for Pink...lol

Funny Dad Thing

My dad works at a stadium in Phoenix where a lot of sporting events and concerts occur. He just called to wish all of us a "Happy Thanksgiving" and then said, "Hey, last night we had a band play that was pretty good... Have you ever heard of Coldplay?"

Ha ha. Oh, Dad.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope you and your families have a lovely, safe day!

It's kind of gross.

Holiday Shopping: Pets

Remembering Ruby: For Families Living Beyond the Loss of a Pet
By Melisa Wells

Remembering Ruby is a wonderful book for anyone who's recently suffered or is about to suffer the loss of a pet. It's written by the lovely Melisa Wells of Suburban Scrawl.

Daisy's Pet Supplies

Daisy's Pet Supplies is an online pet supply store that sells dog toys, beds, leashes, collars—you name it! If Beverly weren't such a freeloader and actually had some money, she'd shop there in a heartbeat.

Vicktory Dog Wine

Okay, the makers of Vicktory Dogs Wine don't exactly read this blog (or maybe they do!), but a few people sent me this link and I had to include it in my gift guide.

So, remember the dogs rescued from Michael Vick's dog-fighting ring? Well, the dogs now live at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, the largest no-kill, no-cage animal rescue sanctuary in the U.S. An artist began painting portraits of these dogs, and a vineyard in California put the portraits on bottles of wine and is giving 100% of the proceeds back to Best Friends. The wine is available by the bottle or the case and would make a great gift for any animal lover.

World Animal Foundation: Adopt An Animal

WAF's Adopt An Animal symbolic adoption helps preserve the planet and protect its animals. It makes a great gift and comes with a kit that includes the following:
  • Photo of Your Adopted Animal
  • Adopt An Animal Adoption Certificate
  • Fact Sheet About Your Adopted Animal
  • Help Animals Info Packet Packed With Information On Animal Issues & How You Can Help Animals And The Environment
Each kit can be sent directly to the recipient at a date of your choosing and will include a letter stating the Adopt A Cow is from you.

FaceBook Message

This is hilarious. I just got this message sent to me through FaceBook. I bolded my favorite parts.

David sent you a message.

Subject: Don't not reply or add me after you read this

Hi Karyn, I am an 8th grader just sending you a quick e-mail on your book. I'm actually doing a small school project on it. And let me tell you, I'm not much of a reader but this book i could not put down. It was funny. :D I know this is years after the whole debt thing. But I only started reading this a few weeks ago. And I really wanted to see if it was real. So I looked to up on the internet and found it to be true. I'm sorry, but i laughed. I knew it was possible but i didn't actually think the whole, people sending you money, was real.

If I had known before, years ago, though i would be pretty young, I would have given you some money, not that I can relate though. Anyway it's nice to see you have overcome your debt, though it was years ago. (I keep repeating that XD)

So remember NOT to e-mail back because I'm on my dads facebook, and I'm not supposed to be talking to strangers. :D So yeah, just wanted to say hi. (don't not reply)

Australia & Celebrity Sightings!

So I went to a screening of Australia today, which was supposed to have a Q & A afterward with Baz Luhrmann. After the film finished, the moderator came out and said, "You guys don't mind if two more people join us for the Q & A, do you? They're just a couple of actors..."

Of course everyone started buzzing, thinking it was going to be Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman... and guess what... it was!

Okay... HE. IS. GORGEOUS. PERFECT. AMAZING. AND SHE. IS. STUNNING.

So, more on the whole thing tomorrow—my sister came with me, it was so much fun, and I loved the movie—I now present you with my bad celebrity pictures of the evening which, btw, blow Mark's out of the water.

Here's Baz Luhrmann, jabbering away on the mic:

And here's Hugh Jackman:

See him? He's standing up, right here:

Okay, I'll lighten it a little:

There you go!

And here are Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman sitting down:

They're the two on the end:

I really, really loved the movie. It's getting panned a little bit, but I laughed, I cried, I squealed with delight—what more could you want in a movie? See it! In the theater!

UPDATE: Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman snuck out for a screening of their new movie “Australia” in midtown New York City on Sunday night... (My pictures are so much better.)
