What I'm Reading Now

Michael lives in my neighborhood. I do not know him but I see him around all the time. This book (his first) was named one of the top 10 best books of 2007 by the NY Times Book Review. He also just won the Impac Dublin Literary Award.

What I Just Read

My rating:

(I need to cry for 5 stars.)

Janelle interviewed me eons ago for Salon.com. She's a sassy lady who's super nice. This is her first novel. It received rave reviews and I loved every minute of it.

Juella Designs

I love Juella Designs! She makes the cutest stamped silver jewelry ever! According to her bio, she's "inspired daily to create new jewelry pieces. The simplest things give me design ideas... a song lyric, an item of clothing, movies, even a color." She also loves doing custom orders so if you see something you like but would like to tweak it a bit, let her know.

MistleToe Makeover

A reader named Lucy sent me a link to a website called Mistletoe Makeover. It's one of those things like "Elf Yourself" where you upload a picture of yourself and, before you know it, you're dancing around a Christmas tree and doing the samba with Santa. What makes Mistletoe Makeover so much fun, however, is that they put makeup on you first! (Since it's sponsored by Sephora.)

Anywho, Lucy uploaded a picture of her adorable daughter, Anna, and suggested I upload one of Nora. But the more I think about it, I'd rather upload one of Jack.

So, here's my little muffin before his makeover:

And here he is after:

PS - Look for the little Yorkie that keeps popping up.

This is your last chance! I'm putting together a holiday shopping made up of stuff that readers (you!) make and sell. So send me an email if you've written a book, own a store, have an Etsy store—whatever! Perhaps I can help get you some business this holiday season.

I'll put my list up later tonight, so email me at mail [at] prettyinthecity.com

I've Seen The Light!

Mark and David are looking for a new chandelier/pendant lamp for above their dining room table and I suggested this:

It's a penis chandelier!

Last Chance Harvey

I'm going to a screening of the movie "Last Chance Harvey" tonight. It stars Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson and will be released in January. (Some theaters may show it in December. Check your local listings!)

Inaguration Tickets

So... who's going to Obama's inauguration? Anyone? Anyone? Our state senator, Charles Shumer, has gotten so many requests for tickets that he's holding a lottery for them. Even though the idea of DC in January isn't very appealing, I signed up to win some. The drawing is on December 5th. I'll keep you updated if I win!

My New BlackBerry

Ugh. I'm so irritated.

First, I need to say that things like this always happen to me.

Things like this always happen to me.

So, I changed my cell phone service from T-Mobile to AT&T but I kept my phone number. AT&T told me that the number transfer would be complete by November 12th. It's still not complete.

I can make outgoing calls from my new BlackBerry, but all the incoming ones come into my old one. So for the past five days, I've been juggling two BlackBerries—getting calls on one, making calls on the other—and it's kind of irritating.

I finally called AT&T today. When I told them that my number transfer still hadn't gone through, they told me that T-Mobile hadn't yet released the number and that I needed to call them. When I called T-Mobile and told them that, they said they released it long ago.

"But it's not working," I said.

"Well, it should," the operator replied.

"BUT IT'S NOT."

After putting me on hold and calling my number, the operator realized I was right. He then got an AT&T operator on the phone who proceeded to tell me there was a glitch in the system that affected my activation.

Now, I realize that there are a lot worse things that could happen to me, but this is just irritating, more so because things like this always happen to me. It's like I've come to expect them. I always have to take an extra step to make sure "automatic" things happen.

So anyway, the phone is now working.

It's Starting! It's Starting!

Awards season is upon us!

I just got my first DVD in the mail for awards season! Yippie!

Because I'm a member of the WGA and get to vote in the Writers Guild Awards, I get screener copies in the mail of films that the studios think are award-worthy.

The first movie I received this season: Burn After Reading, written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen.

Thanks, Focus Features!

UPDATE: Oh, wow... and an invite to a screening of Australia followed by a Q&A with Baz Luhrmann!

I need to go to this one!
