What I'm Reading Now

Michael lives in my neighborhood. I do not know him but I see him around all the time. This book (his first) was named one of the top 10 best books of 2007 by the NY Times Book Review. He also just won the Impac Dublin Literary Award.

What I Just Read

My rating:

(I need to cry for 5 stars.)

Janelle interviewed me eons ago for Salon.com. She's a sassy lady who's super nice. This is her first novel. It received rave reviews and I loved every minute of it.

Bronxville

So I'm in a little place called Bronxville this weekend. Bronxville isn't in the Bronx—it's a small town north of NYC in Westchester County. It's cute, only a 20-minute train ride to midtown. A friend is dog-sitting her brother-in-law's dog, so that's what we're here doing. His house is nice... really old and big. He bought it and is restoring it.

According to Wikipedia, Bronxville is one of the wealthiest communities in the United States. Notable residents have included John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Dick Clark, Ed McMahon, Mika Brzezinski and Andrew Shue.

Bronxville is also home to Sarah Lawrence College. Notable alumni include Barbara Walters, J.J. Abrams, Brian De Palma, Bea Arthur, Sam Robards, Joanne Woodward, Téa Leoni, Holly Robinson Peete, Robin Givens and Julianna Margulies.

According to Wikipedia, references to Sarah Lawrence College in pop culture include:

  • In 10 Things I Hate about You, one of the main characters is determined to attend Sarah Lawrence.
  • In The Notebook, Rachel McAdams' character attends the institution.
  • While trying to get two non-lesbian women to copulate, Christian Bale in American Psycho states: "C'mon - you did go to Sarah Lawrence."
  • In the first episode of season two of The Facts of Life, when Jo and Blair sneak into a bar and are talking to an undercover police officer, he tries to guess which college each girl attends and states that Jo is surely a Sarah Lawrence student because she wears "last year's jeans" and has a "couldn't be bothered" hairstyle.
  • The character of Karen on the hit show Will & Grace attended Sarah Lawrence, and she refers to it throughout the series.
  • In Entourage, Ari Gold points out that Lloyd has an art history degree from Sarah Lawrence.
  • In 21 Jump Street, Detective Judy Hoffs is a Sarah Lawrence graduate, as is actress Holly Robinson, who played Hoffs.
  • The school has been portrayed by such writers as J.D. Salinger, Joseph Heller, Don DeLillo, Tom Wolfe, and Bret Easton Ellis, and has found mention in numerous other television shows and films.

Oh, and The Bronxville School was used as the school in Stepmom.

Neat, huh?
