What I'm Reading Now

Michael lives in my neighborhood. I do not know him but I see him around all the time. This book (his first) was named one of the top 10 best books of 2007 by the NY Times Book Review. He also just won the Impac Dublin Literary Award.

What I Just Read

My rating:

(I need to cry for 5 stars.)

Janelle interviewed me eons ago for Salon.com. She's a sassy lady who's super nice. This is her first novel. It received rave reviews and I loved every minute of it.

Celebrity Sighting: Don Imus

Don Imus, radio talk show host child exploiter, at Eisler Chemist on Lexington & 79th. It's a very small place and I was there buying nail polish (Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat, because I do my own nails still - go, Save Karyn, go) and he was there getting something or other. He was wearing his signature cowboy hat, joking with the staff. He's one of those very recognizable people - you immediately know who he is when you see him.

I just did a lil' research and found out that he founded The Imus Cattle Ranch in Ribera, New Mexico, a working cattle ranch that gives kids with cancer, serious blood disorders, and children who've lost brothers and sisters to SIDS the chance to be a cowboy. Isn't that neat? So if you see Imus Ranch Foods for sale you should buy them because 100% of the profits go to the ranch. Here's a list of stores that carry them.

I know, I know... it's exciting posts like this that keep you coming back to pretty in the city.

UPDATE: My friend Soapy T. tells me he's bad...

"do not support the imus cancer ranch. do a little more research and you see that he has been reported to not spend money on the ranch and beats the cancer kids using them as mules and farm hands to tend to his ranch. he supports using cancer kids as indentured servants.

DO NOT SUPPORT DON IMUS!!!!!"
So I take it back - don't buy his products!

Patrick Swayze and Sam Rock My World

My friend Sam started a blog called The Daily Pube and is inviting all Pretty in the City readers to stop by. (The name is a guy thing, I s'pose, kind of like farting and the WWF.) If Sam charged a cover or sold products, he'd give you all a coupon for money off, but he doesn't, so he didn't.

My favorite things on Sam's site are his random "Patrick Swayze" spottings. He has spotted Swayze at Mardi Gras, the Anna Nicole Smith trial, and the Oscars. The reason I like them is because I had my own run-in with Swayze last summer at my 20 Times a Lady book signing in Chicago. He showed up, uninvited, and sat on the edge of the table in his tap shoes the entire time. It was so irritating, every time I talked he'd interrupt. I'd be like, "Thanks for coming, I hope you liked the book," and he'd cut in like, "Did you see me in Road House?" Here's a photo:

Anyway, if you've had your own Swayze encounter or have spotted him somewhere recently, you should let Sam know and send him a picture. I'm sure he'd be glad to post it on his site.

Support Your Independent Bookseller

This is a shout-out to BESTSELLERS Bookstore & Coffee Co. in Mason, Michigan. They're an independent bookstore that sells books and coffee, and they happen to carry my book.

Thank you, Bestsellers!

And now, a note...

Please support your local independent bookseller! I support the independent bookseller in my neighborhood... BookCourt on Court Street in Brooklyn. -->

Thank you, BookCourt, for being wonderful. (Even though you don't carry my books.)

I s'pose this might be partly my fault, though, because I've never said, "Hey, I live right around the corner... will you carry my books?" Because then what if they get the books, and what if no one buys the books? I mean, how embarrassing would that be for me? And then they'd feel weird when I visit, too, like... "Do we tell her that no one's buying her books?"

I'd go in there today and ask but I feel like the whole thing is a ship that's passed. They'd look up 20 Times, see that it came out in July, and be like, "You've been in here a thousand times since then, why haven't you asked us to do this before, silly?" And then I'd grumble and be like, "Well, I wasn't sure..." and I'd come across sounding like as a total loser, WHICH I AM because I haven't asked my local bookseller, OF WHICH I'M A REGULAR CUSTOMER, to stock my books.

Sh*t. When did I become so neurotic?

Now, wait, wait, wait—I'm forgetting to mention a couple of things. 1) They did carry Save Karyn when it came out; they just don't anymore. 2) I was under the impression that they were gonna carry 20 Times because I befriended a guy who worked there and he said he was gonna order it. But then he quit or got fired or something, and I looked and looked when the book came out and I couldn't find it. I think it was that small detail that made the whole "me asking" thing a little awkward. Like, was 20 Times on order and did they cancel it because the fired guy ordered it?

F*ck it. I'm gonna go in there this weekend and ask.

Do you work at an indie bookstore that carries my book? If so, let me know! And thank you!

Metflex

I just got off the phone with my mom and she told me that my step-dad is really enjoying the "Metflex" he got for Christmas. I was like, "Huh?" thinking it was some kind of workout equipment, but then she said, "You know, Metflex, the movie thing." I was like, "Oh... Netflix! Right..."

Totally random post, I know, and maybe only funny to me and people who know my mom, but I thought I'd share it with you anyway. Happy day.

Al Gore's Deja Vu

This "winning" thing feels very familiar to him. Do you think Bush will try to steal this one, too?

Always remember, Al... Today's joy...

...might be tomorrow's pain.

What a difference a day can make.

UPDATE: This post was linked to from Jossip. Thanks!

NOTE: Please don't steal the fine, Photoshopped image of George W. Bush, leader of the free world, clutching President Elect Al Gore's Oscar from the 79th annual Academy Awards. If you'd like to post it on your blog, you may do so. All I ask is that you credit me with a link back to this website. (Prominently, please... no little "source" link in the corner that no one clicks.) Any evildoers who do not follow the above rules will be denounced and held fully accountable for their actions. Thank you... and go GREEN!

Andre Leon Talley - Celebrity In His Own Right

I have to say that the star of the Academy Awards pre-show for me was, without a doubt, Andre Leon Tally.

My favorite thing he said was to Jennifer Hudson... "May those jeweled Manolo's glide you up to the podium!"

I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple months ago at a special screening of "The Pursuit of Happyness," and he is just as delightful in person as he appears on TV.

Go Andre, Go.
