Okay, this post might sound a little weird to you, but I've been having out-of-body experiences (OBE) a couple of times a week or so since I was about ten years old.
They usually happen when I'm over-tired, like right now, as a matter of fact. It's 3:49 AM and I haven't gone to bed yet even though I'm tired. Once I hit the mattress—like within five or ten minutes of lying down—I'll "fall asleep" quickly and then it will begin to happen. I put "fall asleep" in quotes because I won't actually fall asleep—my body will begin to feel paralyzed, like I can't move it, and then a spiritual body will sort of rise above my sleeping body. Like, there will be a floating body hovering above my real body.
Now, using the hand of my floating body, I can not only touch my sleeping body, but I can actually penetrate it. Like, as I try to touch my body, I can feel the energy of it and my hand just goes through it. So, this would mean that my floating body is a spirit of some kind, right? The same thing happens if I decide to float higher, which is something I can do, too. I can go through the ceiling and even the roof if I want. It hurts, though, as their energy walls seem to be denser than my body.
Yeah, I know. All of this is weird, but it's totally true. My mother and sister can verify it. When I was a little kid, I would usually "wake up" crying when it would happen, as it was really freaky to me. (Again, I put "wake up" in quotes because I'm not actually sleeping when it happens, but paralyzed.)
Nowadays, I've pretty much gotten used to it... except, of course, when my floating self meets and touches another floating person, which has been happening lately. The other night another floating person held my hand and it totally freaked me out.
The reason I'm telling you this is because I'm going to do more research on the subject. I know it happens to people because I read a book on it when I was a kid and there are more available now on Amazon. Also, there's a Wikipedia page on the subject describing exactly what happens to me.
If this happens to anyone who reads my blog, let me know, maybe we can swap stories
BTW, the Wikipedia page is classified under "paranormal," which I find worrisome. (Actually, no—this might mean I have powers! Don't mess with me!)
Okay, off to bed now! Off to float!

Wow that must be totally freaking you out. I have heard about it but never actually met anyone who suffers from it.
Does this only happen when you are very tired or on other occasions as well?
Ok, i'm totally freaked out by the whole 'someone touched your hand' thing--what if they try something else next time, and you're sitting there paralyzed in real life? The floating thing sounds ok, though I do not want it to happen to me and I now do not want to go to bed in case it does. even though i'm a skeptical scientist in my day job, something about the paranormal (and aliens) turns me into a gullible, paranoid little girl.
I am very curious about the experience--when you float through walls and stuff, can you spy on your neighbors (maybe you shouldn't answer that)? do you see the city skyline from the roof? can you do the dishes and chores so your real self won't have to (maybe you can touch stuff if you concentrate...or does that only apply to ghosts in 'Ghost?')? does your cat or dog react to your floating self?? how does that work??
This comment will either piss you off or make a lot of sense......Are you taking any stimulant drugs (for ADHD, or to stay awake) like Ritalin or Adderall? They can cause a variety of experiences like these....along with hyper-focus and determination to research things in great detail....
You are astral projecting by the sounds of it. I'm not sure why it would hurt though. I don't think its suppose to hurt?
Erm, I had this happen to me when I was little. I used to live in a haunted house and strange things happened to me a lot.
But I tripped one day with a plate when I was 4 (I grabbed the plate when my mum wasn't looking). The plate smashed in to my writst. I had stitches and was sent home from the hospital. I remember for a good while I could see myself from above. I also was watching myself asleep from a little mirror at the bottom of my bed.
Then I was in the photo on my wall, with the girl and a horse - just looking at myself.
I was really scary, but everything stopped happening the day we moved house.
I don't have any explination though!
It would totally freak me out if it happened to me now.
Happened to me a lot as a kid, but just the floating part. I've never been able to control it. I've hovered above me and I could see me and my sister sleeping. When I was about 6, I was really sick and dying (literally) and I remember hovering over my body and feeling something pulling me to the ceiling. I saw my dad praying and crying next to me. I even remember his prayers. I've told him all this before and he was shocked cause he says that he really did say that stuff. (My dad is a minister so the paranormal is nothing unusual to him.)
Anyway, as a teen, my sister and I both experienced our bodies becoming totally paralyzed but you're conscious! You try to scream or move and nothing. That was really freaky and scary. My sister says she could feel things around her, I guess spirits. I just felt scared. None of this has happened again once I got married. Basically, it stopped when I got a bedmate. ;o)
I am totally jealous--I wouldn't be scared. I think it is cool. A gift!
Maybe you should seek out the person who held your hand. Maybe this person is "the one".
(And the out-of-body sex would be really interesting!)
Could you get VD from out-of-body sex, I wonder...or pregnant?
OK, I'm teasing about the last part, but the idea of the person is really facinating (and your post in general)
Karyn...
This has happened to me as well. But, only once did I fully engage in the experience. I was about twelve and asleep on the couch. I "woke up" because my mother and sister came in the room. But I could not move. I could see and hear them but my view was from slightly above them in the room. I then remember turning around and seeing my real body laying on the couch. I screamed (or tried), but no one could hear me. I could float around the room and I could hear and understand everything that was going on around me, but I was very aware that they could not hear or see me and I recall wanting to touch them, but I didn't. The entire time this was going on I had a constant internal battle between loving this OBE and feeling that I needed to get back into my body to really wake up.
This took place over 25 years ago yet I remember it like it just happened this morning. In fact I can remember things about that day that I cannot recall about days that happened much more recently or that held much more significance (my wedding or birth of my son). Also, I have felt it happening many times since then, but have forced myself to wake up as soon as I get that feeling that the paralysis is coming on.
This is the first time I have ever shared this with anyone, but your experience brought back such a flood of memory just reading it that I wanted you to know you are not alone.
Hmm. I blogged today about night terrors that I have because I see someone in my room. I wonder if it is people coming to visit me? Weird. Let us know what you find out.
wow. this is very interesting. I however, do not go through the whole floating in air. But I have witness other peoples spirits and I do get paralyzed to my bed when that happens. I just can't move a thing, and I get so scared, im crying and can't even feel the tears coming down my face. This is more of the paranormal stuff. Wich I highly believe. long long story!
araceli
I KNEW it!!!!!!!!!!
Welcome to my world, kiddo.
There is a logical metaphysical explanation to it, but it's rather long and it takes a wide open mind.
my best friend growing up would do the same thing as you! and one time when she was in school, she knew she was going to a field trip to a museum the next day so she made her self do an obe to see what it would look like-an experiment. anyway, she actaully talked with a boy and said that shed meet him there the next day (at the real field trip). so the next day she goes on the trip and the boy was there waiting for her (skipping school because his field trip was the day before). he didnt know that she wasnt real the day before. after that, she tried really hard not to do it anymore because it freaked her out.
and i know you are thinking-sure, she made it up. this girl wouldnt lie about anything, even to her parents (that got us in alot of trouble as teens!).
maybe you can obe to france or italy and meet a really hot guy who can pay for your plane ticket to get the rest of you there!
I had something similar to that happen to me for years, .... and then i found out i was actually having migraines everytime that i was having these "out of body experiences". Mine would happen when i was in class, at home, trying to sleep. I thought i was going crazy!! It is something that was called an 'aura', that happens for me right before i get a migraine. You should research it and maybe that is the same thing that is happening to you?
OMG!! This very thing has been happening to me my whole life, too!!! However, mine starts with a vibrating feeling all over my body. The vibrating continues as I float. I am completely paralyzed while it happens, and sometimes I want to wake up because it frightens me so. I try to move, scream, and eventually kind of "punch thru" the paralysis. I've told a few people about it, and they look at me like I'm nuts. I can't believe this happens to someone else!!!
Alright - I just read the Wikipedia page, and that's EXACTLY what happens to me. Are you frightened while it's happening? Most times I feel frightened, but sometimes it's not. I still can't get over that this happens to you, too.
You need to read sylvia Browne's Book "The book of dreams" she IS the psychic that is on Monetel Williams, chessy, but her books are awesome! She has many, but "the book of dreams" explains everything that you are experiencing!
Wow, this is really interesting. I'm kind of wondering about some of the same questions that Sense to Dollars brought up.
I've never heard of this before. It's never happened to me. I have felt paralyzed when I was sleeping, but that's it. I wonder if the person you touched, lives in your apartment building?
I had an experience like that once... It was around 5 years ago. I had just gone to "sleep" and was lying on my left side when I had the sensation that something had just jumped on to my bed behind me, kind of like what it feels like when your cat jumps on your bed, only I didn't have a pet at the time. I turned my head to see what it was and that's when I became paralyzed. I saw this small demon looking thing and it was right next to my right shoulder and head and I became terrified, but I couldn't move or scream. I wanted to knock it off and jump up but I couldn't. Than all of a sudden I could move and it was gone. But that feeling of not being able to move still stays with me. Every now and then when I take a nap during the day I have that same sensation of not really being asleep and wanting to get up but I can't, my body won't move and I feel like I have to really push through to be able to move. I never had the full experience that you have though. Yours sounds really neat, I would explore it more. I wonder why it hurts?
-TT
Wow, can't say I've ever experienced anything like that but it was interesting to read baout your experience.
I was going to ask the same thing as ANON (5:30 am). Sometimes the meds make me feel floaty late at night when I'm trying to sleep but never to that extreme. I believe each one of us is capable of having these sort of out of body type experiences and when you're sooo overly tired and your body's defenses are down, you're more susceptible to these supernatural things because the mind is not fighting it.
Or...maybe you are a real life Jumper.
Hey Karyn! This happened to me not too long ago.. I remember writing a paper one night and I just happened to be really tired at that time. Food Network was looming in the background and I was typing away on my bed...when I decided to put away my laptop to rest for a bit, I suddenly jerked back and just became paralyzed. It almost felt like an electric shock and for some weird reason, I tried screaming but no word came out. "I" stared at the TV until some 10 minutes later when I finally regained consciousness...it was creepy. =[
i have a similar issue some nights without the floating. i'll fall asleep but "wake up" but i can't move my body, i can't scream, and i can't open my eyes (but i can "see" that i'm in bed). i'll sit there and will my fingers to move or will up enough energy to grunt to talk, in an effort to wake myself fully. i discovered that this is called sleep paralysis. maybe they're related?
Astral Projection. cool, what did you look like to you? Like you look when you look in a mirror?
I've read about this in Silvia Browne's books. She is a physic and explains about all paranormal experiences. I bought a lot of her books after my brother passed away.
You can read about some of it here.

I have never had 'out of body experiences' but do have dreams that come true ever since I was a child.
can you do aa follow-up post to answer some of the questions in the comments setion? I am fascinated by this! If you try to talk to anyone next time, get their phone number or something and see if you can contact them in real life!!!
Test question to see if yiu are psychic. What did the Easter Bunny bring me?

Maybe you'll get some feedback. I am 'valleyfever' in the forum. I started going to this forum recently after I started watching the show "Paranormal State".
I guess this is not a paranormal expierence but a neurological one.
Something similar happened to me over years and since I am kid. It is called (in my language, dunno the english word for it) sleep paralisys.
I was sure that somebody (alians?!) were visiting me at night and I could feel pressure on my body which hurt and made me try to scream and dy of fear. But I was "awake" but could not move or speak or anything. The experience was so real! And made me quite suffer. By the way many people who suffer from this actually "see" monsters and demons and things like that.
Then by some coincidence I found out about it on the internet.
And here comes the neurogical explanation. To some of us it happens when we are very, very tired. Our body already falls asleep but our brain is still fast working and processing data. So we feel paralized as we can't use our body normalls but as our brain goes on working and due to the fear and helplessness we feel then it is also overacting and producing (horrible) images and the feeling of somebudy hurting / opressing us.
I came to the conclusion that most of the abduction of alians and ghost things may come from people who suffer from this sleep paralysis. And it made me quite relieved. By the way being very tired and having drunk alcohol made a higher possibility of having it.
So maybe your experience is something quite similar to that as it also happens to you when you are very tired.
