Michael lives in my neighborhood. I do not know him but I see him around all the time. This book (his first) was named one of the top 10 best books of 2007 by the NY Times Book Review. He also just won the Impac Dublin Literary Award.
What I Just Read
My rating: (I need to cry for 5 stars.)Janelle interviewed me eons ago for Salon.com. She's a sassy lady who's super nice. This is her first novel. It received rave reviews and I loved every minute of it.
The funny thing is that I think I have an older version of this at home, only it's called something like "The Pooh Cook Book." It was my sister's waaaay back in the day, like in 1970s. I'm going to look for it when I get home.
UPDATE: I found the book. Here it is.
It never occurred to me until now that the title could be funny.
I think I'm aiding and abetting a drug dealer right now.
I'm sitting at Starbucks, next to a guy with a laptop. He seems nice, harmless. His phone keeps ringing, and he keeps asking me to watch his stuff while he "runs outside."
Anyway, he disappears around the corner for a few minutes and then comes back. He's done it three times already.
I've checked out what he's doing on his computer and he's not working or anything, he's watching videos on YouTube. Oh, and he's got a mouth full of gold teeth, did I mention that?
UPDATE: It's been a few minutes since I posted this, and I'm worried about something...
Am I guilty of "dental profiling" with regards to this guy? I never would've thought he was a drug dealer if it weren't for the gold teeth. I mean, yes—his behavior is kinda peculiar (the constant disappearing right after he gets a phone call)—but it's the teeth that makes me think he's pushing the junk. I mean, you can't be a banker with teeth like that, right? Still, I feel bad. I'm going to start a conversation with him and get the scoop. BRB.
UPDATE 2: I tried to think of a clever thing to say to him to start conversation, but I couldn't. I momentarily thought about showing him this post for laughs, but decided not to. I mean, how creepy would that be? A person you don't know shows you a book about cooking with pooh. Now who's the shady one—him or me?
Anyway, he left two more times which made me think my profile was right on, but then this cute girl comes and joins him and she so isn't the type to hang out with a drug dealer. They start talking about school and computers and stuff, and he tells her how some girl was supposed to bring him notes from a class he missed. The girl then calls her mom and he talks to her on the phone and he's super nice. I'm beginning to think he's not a drug dealer anymore.
UPDATE 3: He just told a story about how he had a mouse in his apartment and he got a glue trap instead of a real one because he wanted to do the humane thing and set it free. He so isn't a drug dealer. Dental profiling is wrong. I was wrong. I'm glad I shared this story with you, though. Maybe it will help us all think twice next time we judge someone by their teeth.
Beverly is on Pink is the New Blog today! Yay! Thank you, Trent! I think it's going to her head, though. She's been walking around all day in sunglasses, like she's a celeb.
On another note, I saw The Darjeeling Limited last night. I know it's gotten some mixed reviews, but I really loved it. Adrien Brody was great in it; I always forget what a wonderful actor he is. It was funny, the dialogue was witty, and it was shot beautifully—the colors just pop on the screen. More on all of this later, though, I'm getting ready to go out!
How is it that my mom has the same phone she's had since I was in high school (yes, the kind with the cord), yet I've gone through four phones since I've been in this apartment?
I'm cursed when it comes to phones.
The first one I had couldn't hold a battery charge to save its life. The second one made me sound like I live in a bubble. The third one died for no apparent reason. And now the buttons keep getting stuck on the fourth one.
Did you know that if you buy a Starbucks gift card you can get two free iTunes downloads? You can. I'm at Starbucks right now and just bought one for Elvis' cat sitter, Chris the songrwriter, as a little thank you for taking care of my baby. I got one for myself, too, for the free music.
So anyway, I just downloaded the new Jennifer Lopez song "Do It Well." It's one of those sassy songs that makes me wanna move. Like I'm having a problem sitting still in my seat right now. I wanna stand up and strut around this joint like I own it. I wanna sing and dance like I'm in a music video. I can imagine it now... I'd go from table to table and sing...
"I ain't ever met a man like that—NOOO! I ain't ever fell so far, so fast—NOOO! You can turn me on, throw me off track Boy you do it, do it You do it, do it You're doin' it well!"
All the customers would go to take a sip of their coffee but spill it down their chins when they see me. And then I'd jump up on the tables and start hopping around, kicking pumpkin cream cheese muffins everywhere. One would hit a really grumpy manager in the head and he'd get angry and come up to me and try to kick me out, but I'd take ahold of his green apron and tell them how it is so he'd back off. This would make all the baristas happy because they really hate him, so they'd start getting into it, throwing coffee beans around and flipping cups in the air like Tom Cruise in "Cocktail." Pretty soon the whole place would be singing and dancing in unison, and the manager would be pissed so we'd lock him up in the pastry case. He'd bang on the little glass window to get out, but we'd ignore him and keep on dancing like we were in "Grease" or something.
That would be fun.
But back to reality.
I also bought the new Alicia Keys song, "No One." It's sooo good.
Oh! One more random thing that's kinda related to the above because it's about music...
I tried to teach Nora the "Umbrella" song about a month ago. Yes, she's only two years old, but it's a nice, clean song with a friendly message so I thought it was okay. Anyway, I didn't think she was getting it, so I sort of gave up, but the other day my sister said they were at the park and Nora came down the slide and went, "Under my umbrella, ella, ella, ay, ay, ay..."
Plain yogurt is usually so gross, but this Emmi kind is unbelievable! I bought it on accident at a super-cutesy little supermarket by my apartment (okay, fine—overpriced specialty grocer) and it's the best yogurt I've ever eaten in my WHOLE LIFE. Like all I had was one container and I'm hooked. Maybe for life!
Here's the container:
It's just so creamy!
As I was writing this post I did a little research and guess what I learned? Emmi has somewhat of a cult following. I'm not the only one who feels this way about it—yay!
You must buy Emmi today.
UPDATE: According to Emmi's website, you can buy it at these stores.
I'm going to a screening tonight of "A Table In Heaven," a documentary about Sirio Maccioni, the founder/owner of the famous New York restaurant, Le Cirque. I'm excited because I'm an investor in the film.
Um... I just wrote "investor" with the words "I'm an" in front of it. Ha ha. Neato.
I'll give you more details about all of this when I get back!
My favorite show on TV, Weeds, is having a "High-Ku" contest. The website says you can be "handsomely rewarded" for your efforts, but I can't seem to find out what one can win.
Despite this, I wrote something, but it's a riddle limerick instead of a haiku. Here's my submission:
The Mom From Agrestic A Riddle Limerick by Karyn Bosnak
There once was a mom from Agrestic, Who lived a life some might deem majestic. But then her hubby up and croaked, So she started selling smoke, Which was necessary, but not necessarily domestic.
I am sitting at Starbucks right now, working and listening to my iPod.
My iPod has about 4,000 songs on my it and "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root just came on. (I can't embed the video, so click the link to watch it.)
I love when songs spark memories that you might've otherwise forgotten. This song reminds me of rollerblading through my friend Tracy's apartment in Chicago. I want to say it was Memorial Day weekend, 1995. She had some people over for a cookout, and after a few cocktails, we were rollerblading through her apartment.
I seriously just walked up to him and was like, "Are you Trent?" I then proceeded to tell him all about my book (work it, Karyn) and then took a picture of him with Beverly. She liked him, which means he's a good person.
I like Pink is the New Blog because Trent's not viciously mean like so many other bloggers. He's a good Midwestern boy like me. (Except I'm a girl.)
Anyway, here's the pic. Beverly totally thinks she's a celebrity now.
Roseanne has gone over the edge, using humor to personally attack Perez. Making threats to someone’s life is funny? NOT!... Joking that you want to shoot someone IS NOT FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!
What a hypocritical pig.
Let up on Britney. She obviously has mental problems.
